Student Spotlight: Grade 9 Student Shines at the 2024 Portuguese Olympiad Tournament

Mirella Faur takes home the gold and drives the inclusion of the Portuguese Olympiad at School of the Nations

During the first semester of the 2024-25 school year, Mirella Faur, a Grade 9 student, achieved an extraordinary milestone by participating in the inaugural edition of the Torneio da OP (TOP 2024). Mirella won the gold medal and secured first place in Category A, a division for students in their first year of High School, by scoring a perfect 100% on the test, which consisted of 16 questions. With a flawless score and the best completion time among her category’s participants, she not only demonstrated exceptional skill but also inspired a transformative change at our school.

Torneio da Olimpíada de Português 2024

The TOP 2024 - or by free translation Portuguese Olympiad Tournament 2024 - is an online, individual competition aimed at promoting the mastery of the Portuguese language. Unlike other academic contests, participation is open to anyone aged six and older, with no restrictions regarding educational background or affiliation with learning institutions. This inclusive approach seeks to democratize access to learning and rewards participants’ achievements with medals and certificates.

Mirella took the initiative to participate independently after noticing that the school did not yet offer the Portuguese Olympiad. Her success and dedication, however, inspired us to enroll Nations in the Portuguese Olympiad starting in 2025. This decision reflects not only the school’s commitment to its students’ academic growth but also its recognition of the importance of highlighting diverse areas of knowledge.

In her statement, Mirella expressed pride in her accomplishment and emphasized the competition’s impact on her educational journey:

“I am very proud of myself! It was a great experience, and I am happy with my result. I think it is very important for the school to offer the Portuguese Olympiad because it already values the STEM fields so much, and not everyone is interested in those areas. Some prefer the humanities and languages. I know the school is starting to invest in other contests, like the Brazilian History Olympiad, and including the Portuguese Olympiad would be fantastic because it introduces new topics, opportunities, and subjects. You also gain access to universities that value this type of knowledge for the future while developing skills in these fields.”

Mirella’s story is an inspiring example of how individual initiative can lead to collective impact. Her victory at TOP 2024 not only celebrates the talent of a dedicated student but also marks a new chapter in School of the Nations’ history. The school now plans to expand its academic offerings to include the Portuguese Olympiad. Mirella’s determination serves as a guiding force, leading Nations toward a prosperous path marked by inspiration and the constant pursuit of new achievements.
