An Evening of Reflection, Expression, and Connection at School of the Nations
The Festival of Lights has long been a cherished tradition at Nations, offering the community a unique opportunity to come together in prayer and reflection. Far more than an event, it embodies the school’s commitment to celebrating cultural and religious diversity while showcasing the richness of human expression through art, music, and shared traditions. As usual, the Festival of Lights took place in December, celebrating the end of the school year and embracing the spirit of harmony, unity, and hope that defines this time of ye
Families attending the festival enjoyed a wide range of performances, from vibrant music and dance displays to reflective moments led by students, and staff members. The festival also featured presentations from families representing diverse religious traditions, including Buddhism, Islam, Catholicism, Judaism, and the Bahá'í Faith, creating a tapestry of spiritual perspectives.
A particularly moving highlight was the Candle Ceremony. During this moment, students from Elementary through High School shared heartfelt wishes for the betterment of the world, lighting candles as symbols of hope and unity. This simple yet profound act underscored the event’s overarching message of harmony and collective progress.
Moral Education for Global Citizenship
The event brought together students from all sections of the school, from Early Childhood to High School. Each group showcased talents and knowledge gained over the semester, reflecting not only their academic progress but also the moral and spiritual growth fostered through the school’s Moral Education for Global Citizenship programs. These programs are foundational to the school’s holistic approach, which integrates spiritual development as one of the four essential aspects of life.
The journey begins with the Habits of the Heart program, guiding Nursery to Grade 1 students in developing virtues and practicing acts of care and service. As students transition to Elementary School, the Virtues for Life program builds on these foundations, encouraging them to apply moral values in meaningful ways within their personal and community lives. For middle schoolers in Grades 6 through 8, the Junior Youth Program helps shape attitudes and beliefs, equipping them with the moral compass to navigate adolescence and contribute to society as thoughtful, ethical individuals. Finally, High School students engage in the Nations in Action program, where they deepen their understanding of societal needs and take action as informed, empathetic global citizens.
The Festival also inspired creative projects like that of Cade Robinson, a Grade 5 student in Elementary School. As a participant in the After School Program Sound Lab, Cade created an original song reflecting what the Festival of Lights means to him. Applying skills learned in the program, such as music mixing, he developed a composition that blends creativity and technique. Part of the lyrics was crafted with the help of AI tools, while the rest came from his own inspiration, connecting the school’s values to the spirit of the event. His project exemplifies how the Festival of Lights fosters both academic learning and the emotional and creative growth of students.
The Festival of Lights exemplifies the mission, vision, and values of School of the Nations, cultivating an environment where differences are embraced and celebrated. This annual gathering not only reinforces the school’s commitment to fostering global citizenship but also serves as a beautiful reminder of the transformative power of community, diversity, and shared purpose.
